What to Expect From a Consultation
Why are consultations so important?
An initial meeting will let me know more about you and your expectations. A consultation helps us be more comfortable together, which means more genuine photos!
I’ll ask you questions like:
What does this session mean to you?
What is your relationship with the people joining you?
Are there any props or items of significance you want to include to elevate your session?
We’ll also discuss location preferences, going over things like:
Do you have a place in mind that’s meaningful to you?
How far are you willing to travel?
Are you interested in an indoor studio?
We’ll cover practical details such as the best time of day for lighting, the session’s duration, and any special requests or needs you might have. I’ll also offer tips on what to wear.
This doesn’t have to be a long meeting! Typically, we can cover everything in 30 minutes. We can get together in person, over video, or with a simple phone call. I can tell you more about me and answer any questions you have. helps us create the session according to your preferences and allows us to brainstorm if you need more ideas, all in the name of making your photos more unique and personalized.
Building Rapport & Addressing Concerns:
Establishing a personal connection during the consultation is crucial for capturing genuine, comfortable moments. This meeting builds trust, reassures you that you’re in capable hands, and sets the stage for a smooth and enjoyable session.
I like to talk about any insecurities you may have or any features you want to accentuate so I can be mindful of them when we’re shooting. It’s the perfect time to address any concerns or fears you might have about being photographed, ensuring you feel comfortable and prepared.
After the consultation, I’ll send a summary of what we discussed, confirm details, and provide any additional resources or information you might need.
Client Stories:
The Gosheas
I worked with the Goshea family, which included Deb, her two children, Kalee and Tyler, and her two young grandchildren, Emerson and Warren. During my consultation with Deb and Kalee, we talked about their concerns about keeping the boys entertained, which led us to a plan for treating the session documentary-style. I learned about their desired location, Tanglewood in Lenox, MA, and how it was a place they visited often and with other members of their family. I was able to find out what was important to them. For Deb, she wanted to make sure we took photos of her walking with the boys through the grounds. We talked about outfit choices and colors to wear that would compliment them, the location, and the season.
On session day, we created a “family fun day” atmosphere. We took traditionally posed photos early on in the session and then allowed the kids to be kids, with the rest of us chasing them around. They brought coloring books, and we had them pinecone hunting, climbing trees, and playing tag in the grass. The boys had a great time and weren’t rushing to get out of there. The adults were happy and not stressed from having to fight with bored children being forced to stand still and smile for an hour.
